A Career in Real Estate

Considering a career in real estate?  Here are 8 things you need to know before entering the business.

  1. Real Estate is a licensed profession in all Provinces – you must contact the Nova Scotia Association of Realtors or the New Brunswick Real Estate Association, as may be appropriate, to register for licensing training before becoming an Agent.
  2. The vast majority of sales people in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are independent contractors.  This means that most people getting started are basically setting up a small business.
  3. All new licensees must associate themselves with a Real Estate Brokerage office in Nova Scotia or a Real Estate Agency office in New Brunswick prior to receiving a license to practice from either Province.
  4. Well over 90% of real estate sales people in both Provinces work on a commission basis.
  5. Being an independent contractor also allows real estate sales people to work on an independent schedule – which means that each individual decides what activities will form their day.
  6. A real estate license allows the holder to represent clients in buying and selling homes, condos, land, commercial buildings, businesses and more.
  7. As a real estate salesperson, you will incur a number of expenses, much like any other small business, along with some start-up costs (advertising, communications, licensing, etc.)
  8. Real Estate Sales is a career for people who are “Service Oriented”.  As an agent, your primary responsibility is to provide service to clients in facilitating the purchase or sale of a home.  Relationships, and their creation and maintenance, are key to a successful career.
