How Homeowners Can Choose the Ideal Roofing Contractor

One of the biggest hurdles you will face when having your roof fixed or replaced is choosing the right contractor to do the job. This is especially crucial if your roof has sustained substantial damage. Understandably, the required repairs should be done immediately and, of course, done right the first time around.

However, it is important that you don’t opt for the first roofing contractor you come across. Like roofing contractors who are meticulous about the residential roofing insurance they choose, you also need to exercise the same vigilance when looking for the best roofing contractor to work with.

To find a trustworthy, competent, and professional roofing contractor, keep the following tips in mind:

Tip #01: Check for Certifications and Training

Many shingle manufacturers provide product training to their installers. This is done to ensure they can carry out the right installation process. In line with this, it is considered ideal that you ask prospects about the training and certifications they have.

Also, it is recommended that you take your time and don’t rush the process. Do not leave any stone unturned, and make sure you are hiring the best roofing contractor available. It is also important to remember that you can’t find the right contractor in just a few hours.

Tip #02: Check for Insurance

Ensure your chosen contractor has liability insurance and worker’s compensation. General liability insurance can help ensure your home is protected if the contractor damages it while doing the replacement or repair.

On the other hand, worker’s compensation will ensure there is coverage if a contractor is injured while doing the job. Insurance is crucial so you can protect yourself from any possible lawsuits.

Tip #03: Get Things in Writing

Having a written contract can go a long way towards protecting you as a homeowner. If the contractor you have chosen is not willing to provide a formal contract, consider it best to find another contractor who will.

The contract should also outline clearly the roofing materials used (type, brand, and colour), the payment schedules, and the list of subcontractors. The contract should also cover how the landscaping and garden will be protected.

Tip #04: Make Sure You Educate Yourself

It is vital that you have a clear understanding of the work done to your roof. Do you have moisture or structural damage, or is it just minor repairs? A clear understanding of the job scope can help you monitor the work so it is done properly.

Tip #05: Ask for References

If you have shortlisted a few potential contractors, ask them for references. Asking for at least ten references would be ideal. Moreover, don’t forget to call those references. Better yet, you can also check the work the prospects have completed.

When talking to references, ask them if the job was completed correctly. You can also ask if they were on time and if they handled any delays and problems accordingly. If the prospect refuses to provide any references, it would be best not to hire them.

Tip #06: For Easy Access, Go Local

Most roofers you encounter will entice you by telling you they provide high-quality services. However, apart from the quality work they do, it is also ideal that you factor in their location. Working with a local company can provide the following benefits:

  • Local companies already have an idea what the weather in your area is like, so they will know what can damage your roof
  • They can attend to any roofing emergencies you may have faster
  • Most local roofing contractors often honour warranties

Tip #07: Go With Your Gut

A good roofing contractor won’t pressure you to choose them or to sign anything before you hire them. Also, you should not trust companies that ask for cash before they even start working. Companies that offer to file your insurance claim on your behalf may also be fraudulent.

After doing your research, it is recommended that you listen to your gut. If you don’t feel right about a prospect, it would be best to pursue other options. A seasoned and experienced company should make you feel good about working with them.

Final Thought

When it comes to choosing a roofing contractor, price should not be your sole basis. Keep in mind that replacing or repairing your roof can cost a substantial amount of money. That said, you need to take your time so you will find a contractor that will not give you any headaches and will provide the most bang for your buck.
