What Should I Focus on as a New Agent?

I believe that there are really 2 key things that every new agent should be focused on at the beginning of their career (first 6 months), and in fact they are the timeless things that anyone can be doing to take their business to that next level.

  1. Focus time every day on growing the relationships you have in your community.  Sales is a process of meeting and developing relationships with customers.  That’s it.  Nothing more.  So the goal of the new agent should be to grow not only the number of people that they know, but also to deepen the relationship that you have with people.  If you think of your relationship with people as a “savings account”, this is a period where you need to be making as many deposits as possible.  Find ways to be adding value to the relationships you have with potential clients (and in our business that is everyone!), and then focus on meeting more of these relationships to be adding value to.  Althoughvalue added many people think that they have to be doing this through things like chamber events, networking dinners etc., these types of relationships can just as easily be grown on the sideline of the kids soccer game, at the gym or in the class you take at the community center.  Just grow your relationships the way you have done for your whole life!  Not great at that?  Open houses, model homes, toastmasters, volunteering etc. are all great ways to meet new people.
  2. Learn about your business. This means getting out and driving around neighborhoods, learning about negotiation strategies, looking at other agents’ listing and buyer presentations, getting to know how other service providers support your business (lawyers, mortgage reps, inspectors etc.).  One of the biggest challenges that new agents have is a lack of confidence in their professional competence, so every learning opportunity that you have to grow your expertise should be taken advantage of!

If you focus your time on those two things each day, you will soon have to add in the challenges that come with properly servicing your clients on a regular basis.

What are the ways you are adding value to the people in your Database?
