Ongoing Education for Real Estate Agents

A lot of people don’t know about the requirements that agents have for continuing education in our business – so I thought I would take a little bit of time to describe what agents do each year to ensure that their skill and knowledge are at their peak.

Each year, in Nova Scotia, all Licensees are required to complete one full day of Mandatory training, which is a course that is selected by the real estate commission that will apply to all. The mandatory often covers issues of ethics, agency law, client care and liability issues. It is a great learning opportunity, that often sparks great conversation among peers who are in each course.

In addition to the Mandatory course each year, all licensees are required to do a half day “elective” course, and in Nova Scotia, these courses can range from anything surrounding the transaction (ie. new construction forms, properly measuring a home etc.) through to items that will help agents support people in their home ownership (how to care for your well water, understanding building codes etc.). These electives are to be chosen by the agent, and completed each year as well.

All of this is over and above what many brokerages offer in house for their training programs – all in the name of ensuring that clients have the most knowledgeable representation possible!
