About Halifax, Dartmouth & Surrounding Areas
Halifax, is an urban area centered on the Halifax harbour and is the capital of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is composed of more than 200 communities and neighbourhoods. The municipality consists of four former municipalities that were amalgamated in 1996: Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax County. This urban area comprises the Halifax Metropolitan Area and the Dartmouth Metropolitan Area.
The HRM ‘urban core’ is built up the most out of all the area, this urban core is on the Halifax Peninsula and just inside the circumferential highway in Dartmouth. The ‘urban area’ is the area that are surrounding the Halifax Harbour which ultimately overlaps into built-up suburban areas such as Bedford and Sackville. The ‘Capital District’ is comprised of Nova Scotia's centre of businesses, government, events, and attractions. The ‘Capital District’ includes the following areas: Downtown Halifax, Quinpool District, Spring Garden, and Downtown Dartmouth areas. All in all it comprises the metropolitan areas of Halifax and Dartmouth, which are the boundaries of these former cities.
Besides the attraction to the famous Citadel Hill, Halifax offers several other interesting attractions. One of these more notable attractions is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic where they have on showcase artifacts from the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. This is significant as there are 121 victims from this tragedy in 1912 that are now buried in Halifax’s Fairview Lawn Cemetery.
