About Moncton & Surrounding Areas

Moncton is one of three urban centres in the province of New Brunswick along with Saint John and Fredericton; Moncton being the largest of them all. Moncton is situated in the Petitcodiac River Valley, and lies almost directly at the centre of the Maritime provinces. This in part earned them the nickname of being the “Hub City”. This nickname came about due to not just being the central city in the Maritimes but also historically being the hub for railway and land transport to the Maritimes. Some of the towns and suburban areas surrounding Moncton are Dieppe, Riverview, Westmorland and Albert counties.

Moncton as a city has a population of 85,198 and a land area of 142 km2 (55 sq mi). The Moncton area was first settled in 1733, although Moncton was settled in 1733 they weren’t officially founded until 1766 when the Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants from Philadelphia arrived. Moncton was named after Lt. Col. Robert Monckton, a British officer who captured the nearby Fort Beauséjour a century earlier.

Moncton’s economy can be described as stable and diverse; this is partially due to the fact that Moncton’s economy has received national recognition for their local unemployment rate being consistently less than the national average. The primary sectors comprising Moncton’s economy are traditional transportation, distribution, retailing, and commercial heritage. They have also added supplements to their economy by having strength in the educational, health care, financial, information technology, and insurance sectors. The Rolling Stones’ largest North American Concert was held in Moncton in 2005

U2 held the last concert of their 360º world tour in Moncton.

Moncton’s Magnetic Hill Concert Site welcomed the legendary rock band, AC/DC twice, in 2009 and in 2015.

Moncton’s Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada is the only professional ballet company in Atlantic Canada.
