September 29, 2021Top 5 Design Trends of the Decade
Ten Years in the Making
Do you remember your cutting edge or risky decor choice, or maybe it was a bold colour for the walls? Ah, the nostalgia of making exciting choices that we thought we would love forever! Sometimes those styles even make their way back into the popular opinion, so let’s look at the top 5 trends from the past decade.
1. Chevron Pattern
This busy graphic pattern made a strong appearance in many facets of home decor in the past decade, and it quickly became a crowd favourite. The chevron print made its way onto the scene with accent pillows, rugs and throws, but in its peak there were entire accent walls with this pattern being the focal point of the room.
2. Minimalism
Global furniture and home decor giant Ikea took hold of this market over the past decade, truly allowing every budget to have a taste of the sought after clean but cosy feeling in their home.
3. Eccentric and Eclectic
Handcrafted and restored furniture and decor made a great comeback in the past decade, with people opting for natural wood, antiques and unique conversation pieces in their home.
4. Bright White
Prior to 2016, the term ‘influencer’ was not widely used or recognized according to Google Trends data. With the rise of Pinterest boards, and social influencers people began to strive for and mimic the stark white decor trends being showcased on these platforms.
5. Natural and Homegrown
This trend focuses on a deeper connection with the earth, natural textiles and colours, as well as more eco-friendly choices. A product of wanting to be closer to nature is also seen with an increased interest in live houseplants, and edible plant varieties.
